Marble Falls, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team put together the top two individual rounds and the Cru has a seven stroke lead after the first round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Monday in Marble Falls. The UMHB women posted a 335 total to lead second-place Schreiner University’s 342 by seven shots. McMurry University is in third place with a 344, defending ASC champion U.T.-Tyler fired a 345 and is in fourth place. LeTourneau University posted a 352 on Monday for fifth place, Texas Lutheran University’s 368 team total is good for sixth place and U.T.-Dallas is in seventh place with a 426 total. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,912-yard layout at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

HORSHOE BAY, Texas –– Eighty-two golfers – 47 men, 35 women – are set to tee off on Monday (April 19) at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Golf Championships being played over two days for the first time at Horseshoe Bay Resort. The conference office released the field on Wednesday (April 14).

The UMHB women fired a final round 340 to finish with a 326-340=666, 11 strokes behind team champion McMurry University’s 323-332=665. Tyler Junior College finished in second place, five strokes ahead of UMHB with a 331-330=661. Texarkana Community College claimed fourth place with a 335-337=672, Schreiner University carded a 345-329=674 to finish in fifth place, tournament host LeTourneau University shot 347-352=699 and finished in sixth place and Texas Lutheran University rounded out the field with a 369-370=739 team total. UMHB fired a 346-357=703 team total and finished 26 strokes behind tournament host and team champion Southwestern University’s 336-341=677 score. U.T.-Tyler took second place with a 345-344=689 and St. Mary’s College claimed third place, finishing 10 strokes ahead of the Cru with a 339-354=693. LeTourneau University was fifth with a 376-353=729, Trinity University posted a 368-370=738 for sixth place and Concordia Texas took seventh place with a 436-415=851 team total. The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,878-yard layout at Berry Creek Golf Course.

Athletes of the Week
Max Taylor
Football
Max has been named of 112 finalists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has helped organize the UMHB Sole 2 Soul campaign each of the past two years. That campaign has helped raise nearly $3,300 and four boxes of shoes for donation to orphans in Haiti. Max is also a Preseason All-American and one of the team leaders for the Cru football program on and off the field.
Sara Hayward
Women's Volleyball
Sara has been elected to serve as President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The junior is also a standout on the court for the Cru volleyball team and she will be counted on to serve as a team leader in addition to her duties as SAAC President.
