Men's Tennis opens play at ITA Southwest Regional

Tyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's tennis opened play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament Friday in Tyler. The Cru will send several players into the round of 16 following the first day of action.

In “A” singles, Jacob Stamps opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alec Bergerson of Southwestern University before falling to Trinity University's Greg Haugen 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Will Summers fell to Dustin Foster of U.T.-Dallas 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 in the opening round but responded with consolation victories over Matt Salazar of Schreiner University (10-2) and Jesse Rawlings of Hardin-Simmons (10-5). Those wins send Summers into the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

In “B” singles, UMHB's John Martin is into the round of 16. Martin opened with a 6-4, 7-5 win over John Thompson of Texas Lutheran University before beating U.T.-Tyler's Matthew Vechione 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. Hunter Voyles opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over ETBU's Jeremy Rhodes and then fell to top seeded Greg Marifian of Trinity University 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Tevin Ogo posted a 6-2, 6-2 first round win over Southwestern's Derek Grass before falling to Schreiner's Marco Hinojosa 6-2, 7-5. T.J. Kittrell opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Schreiner's Elliot Frey before falling to TLU's Clifford Pack 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. John Contreras lost in the opening round to Scott Eibes of Ozarks 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 and Jimmy Turner fell in the first round to LeTourneau's Michael McLaughlin 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

In “B” singles consolation, Contreras fell Omeed Azmoudeh of Southwestern 10-7. Jimmy Turner beat Ben Wilson of ETBU 10-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

In “A” doubles, Summers and Voyles lost to UTD's Foster and Casey Clark 8-5 in the first round. That duo then turned around and beat Carlos Cantu and Alex Huffman of LeTourneau 8-5 in the consolation round to move into the quarterfinals. Ogo and Contreras fell to Bishop Bass and Todd Turner of Ozarks 8-1 in the first round before dropping an 8-0 decision to Sanio Dizdarevic and Kyle Thompson of TLU in the consolation bracket.

In “B” doubles, Stamps and Kittrell are into the quarterfinals. The pair opened with an 8-5 win over Henry Henk and Jordan Wilson of Hardin-Simmons before beating Austin College's Ben Boerner and David Smith 8-1 in the round of 16. Martin and Turner opened with an 8-2 loss to Jacob Van Der Schans and Vechione of U.T.-Tyler. The pair then posted an 8-2 win over Justin Fry and Dylan Price of Hardin-Simmons to move into the consolation quarterfinals.

Singles and doubles play continues on Saturday with the championship matches scheduled for Sunday. The ITA Regional Tournament also closes out the fall schedule for the UMHB men.
