KALAMAZOO, Michigan – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor tennis player
Brittni Fausett will face Nataly Mendoza of Skidmore College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual National Championships tomorrow morning. Fausett and Mendoza will compete at 7 a.m. Central, with the winner of that match advancing to the Second Round at 11 a.m.
Fausett, a senior from Cameron Yoe High School, is appearing in her second National Championship of the school year. She became the first UMHB singles player to advance to the ITA Small College National Championships in the fall and finished third in that event. Fausett is also the first UMHB singles player selected to compete in the 32-player field in the NCAA Division III Individual National Championships.
Mendoza is a senior from San Francisco, Calif. and playing in her fourth season for the Thoroughbreds. She went 6-5 in No. 1 singles this season with an 8-2 record at No. 1 doubles. Mendoza was the Liberty League Rookie of the Year her freshman season and has won all-conference awards all four years. Skidmore won the Liberty League Championship earlier this season and competed in this year's NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Team National Championships before falling 5-0 to Amherst in the round of 16 on Sunday.
The Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches will be played on Friday with the Championship Match taking place on Saturday morning. The 2013 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships are being played at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium and Western Michigan University's Sorensen Courts and the event is being hosted by Kalamazoo College.
Fausett will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 22-2 overall singles record this school year. She is one of three American Southwest Conference individuals selected to compete in the event, joining Casey Johnson of U.T.-Dallas and Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran University. This marks just the second time in UMHB tennis history the Cru has sent players to the NCAA Individual Championships. The doubles team of sisters
