Arlington, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team never recovered from an eight-run third inning and the Cru lost to U.T.-Arlington 13-3 Wednesday afternoon in Arlington. The loss drops UMHB to 15-18 on the season. The Division I Mavericks improve to 18-16 on the year with the victory.
U.T.-Arlington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then broke the game open with the nine-run third inning. The Mavericks took advantage of six hits, a walk, two wild pitches, a passed ball, an error and a balk in the frame to push the lead to 9-0. The Cru would score its first run of the game on
Seth Mogavero's RBI single in the top of the seventh to cut it to 9-1, but UTA answered with four more in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Walker's two-run single was the biggest hit in that inning for the Mavericks. UMHB would cut it to 13-3 in the top of the eighth when two runs scored on a UTA fielding error, but that's as close as the Cru would get.
Cameron Arnett took the loss for UMHB to drop to 3-3 on the season. Arnett gave up one run on three innings in the first inning. Mark Picca (1-1) earned the win after shutting out the Cru for five innings and scattering three hits. The Cru managed just five hits in the game off four Maverick pitchers and those hits came from five different players. Jesse Payne had four hits for UTA and Brian Nephew added three more to lead an 18-hit attack.
The Cru will now return home to host Howard Payne University for a crucial, three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series this weekend at Red Murff Field. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
