Luke Howard named assistant football coach

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football program is bringing back another familiar face with the hiring of Luke Howard as the Cru's newest full-time assistant coach. Howard will coach running backs for UMHB and fill the void left by Joe George's retirement in May.

Howard returns to his alma mater after spending last season as an assistant coach at Cuero High School. He coached receivers for the Gobblers and also served as the head golf coach at Cuero. Howard previously served a five-year stint as a student and graduate assistant coach at UMHB before moving to Cuero. Howard was an assistant for the Cru from 2009-13 and UMHB posted a 60-6 overall record during his tenure on the sideline. Howard worked mainly with receivers for the Cru in his first stint, but also coached quarterbacks and worked with the team's strength and conditioning program during that time.

"We are very excited to have Luke back at UMHB," Cru Head Coach Pete Fredenburg said. "He comes from a family of coaches and has devoted himself to becoming a better coach. He loves this University and he loves this program and we are just very excited to have him back on staff as a full-time assistant."

Howard played three years of football at UMHB as a quarterback and wide receiver. He graduated from UMHB in May of 2012 with a degree in Science and History and earned a Master's Degree in Sport Administration from UMHB in May of 2014. Howard is married to Savanna, a UMHB graduate herself, and is a native of Gatesville.

"It is pretty special to be back at UMHB and be a part of Cru football again," Howard said. "This has been our home for eight years and to have the opportunity to come back and be part of this program and this community again is pretty special for both of us."

The Cru went 11-1 overall in 2014 and won its 12th American Southwest Conference championship with a 5-0 league record. UMHB will kick off the 2015 season at Ohio Wesleyan in the first meeting between those two programs on September 5th.
