Here is the latest information regarding parking and traffic for the inaugural season at Crusader Stadium. The campus landscape has undergone radical changes in the last two years, with a stadium and student union built on areas previously devoted to parking and with many new parking areas added around the campus perimeter. Campus administrators have devoted serious time and thought to mapping out traffic patterns and designating parking areas so Crusader fans will find parking and entering the stadium an easy experience on game day.
Shuttle Service
Since parking for the general public will be quite limited next to the stadium, a complimentary shuttle system will be used to transport fans to and from parking areas at the edges of the campus. Fans are encouraged to park at in the large parking lots at the Sports Plex (just off the Loop 121 entrance on Crusader Way) and near the academic buildings near the front entrance of the campus (between Pearl Street and College Street). At five minute intervals, shuttle buses will pick up fans at designated stops next to those lots and will drop them at the main gate of the stadium. The shuttles will continue running throughout the evening to give fans rides back to their cars at whatever time they choose to leave.
Think Clockwise
To prevent congestion in front of the stadium on University Drive, the UMHB Department of Public Safety will convert University Drive into a one-way street between 9
th Avenue and Mabee Drive, prior to game time. Access to that road will be limited to fans with reserved parking passes, visitors with handicapped parking hangtags, and drivers who need to drop off guests with limited mobility at the curb near the stadium entrance. Those visitors will be encouraged to come toward the stadium on 9
th Avenue, turn right on University Drive and then drive on to Crusader Way to find parking in the new lots along the north side of the campus or in the remote parking areas at the Sportsplex or near the Main Street entrance. The clockwise traffic flow will allow the shuttles and individual vehicles to pause curbside to deliver fans to the stadium gate without creating jams on the two-lane street.
Overflow Parking
With unusually large crowds expected for the inaugural season, UMHB has designated an overflow parking area on the northeast corner of the campus. The grassy expanse that stretches along the railroad tracks between College Street and Main Street will be available for parking, should other parking areas be filled. Those who park in the overflow area can walk across the campus to the stadium entrances on University Drive or can walk two blocks south on College Street, where shuttles will be picking up fans at the entrance to Vann Circle, in front of the large letters which spell out “UMHB.” If it rains, an alternative overflow area will be offered at the parking lots near First Baptist Church, and a shuttle will carry fans to the stadium from there and back.
Handicapped Visitors
Parking spaces on the University Drive side of the Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center have been expanded to provide easy access for handicapped visitors. Two tiers of parking will be reserved for handicapped guests on the ticket booth side of the center. To enter the area, each vehicle must have an official handicapped parking plates or a placard hanging from the rearview mirror of the car. Placards may be obtained at the Bell County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office (550 E. 2
nd Avenue, Belton 76513; phone 254-933-5321 or go to
www.bellcountytx.com/county_government/tax_assessor-collector/index.php)
Visitors who have difficulty managing steps will be encouraged to enter the stadium through the glass doors at the center of the stadium on University Drive; inside, an elevator will be available to carry them to the level where their seats will be located. Special seating for individuals confined to wheelchairs will be available on the concourse level of the stadium; parties needing handicapped seating can request to be assigned to these areas when they purchase their tickets.
After the Game
To keep postgame traffic flowing smoothly, fans will be directed to exit the campus along one of four routes. Fans who want to go west will be able to drive out Crusader Way to Loop 121, where officers will be on hand to direct traffic. A second exit route will take fans east on Crusader Way to College Street, where fans will be able to turn left across the railroad tracks, then left again on a new road that leads to Industrial Park Road, Commerce, and on to Sparta Road. A third exit route will send fans east on 9
th Avenue to Main Street, where a new street light will make turning onto Main much easier than it has been before. A fourth exit route will send fans south along Pearl Street, to where officers will be directing traffic at the intersection of Pearl and 2
nd Avenue. Fans who whose one of these routes will be guaranteed that their game day smiles will last all the way home.
