Round Rock, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's golf team fired two consistent rounds and the Cru men are tied for fifth place after the opening day of the West Region Invitational Monday in Round Rock. The UMHB men fired a 313-314=627 and the Cru is tied for fifth place with Concordia Texas (315-312=627). U.T.-Brownsville holds down the top spot after posting the two lowest rounds of the tournament to card a 285-290=575. Tournament host Southwestern University is in second place with a 296-310=606, Trinity University's 307-304=611 is good for third place and Texas Lutheran is in fourth place, 12 strokes ahead of the Cru with a 306-309=615 team total. California Lutheran is in seventh place with a 301-327=628 and McMurry University rounds out the field after shooting 324-314=638. The two-day, 54-hole event is being played on a par-72, 7,040-yard layout at Tervista Golf Course in Round Rock.
Ryan Berry and Mike McQuaid fired the low individual totals for the UMHB men over the first two rounds of the tournament. Berry (80-75) and McQuaid (75-80) are tied for 22nd place with 155's. Garrison Nordt (80-78) and Bryce Myburgh (80-78) are tied for 27th place after both players fired 158's. Johnathan Sustaita posted a 78-81=159 and Taylor Holleyman recorded an 83-76=159 and the two players are tied for 30th place overall and Spencer Turner is tied for 45th place with an 82-82=164. Chris Milligan of U.T.-Brownsville has the individual lead after shooting a blistering 69-70=139 total. Milligan has a five-shot lead over the rest of the field.
The tournament will wrap up with 18 more holes tomorrow. Teams will tee off with an 8:00 AM shotgun start. The West Region Invitational is the final tune-up before the Cru defends its back-to-back conference titles at the ASC Championship Tournament on April 19th and 20th.
