Tyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team grabbed an early lead, saw it slip away, but found an answer in a shootout to advance past Mississippi College in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday afternoon in Tyler. The two teams were tied 1-1 after two overtimes, but UMHB advance by winning penalty kicks 4-3. The Cru is now 11-4-2 on the season. The Choctaws finish the year at 14-3-3.

With Mississippi College shooting first, both teams converted their first two attempts. Cru goalkeeper Adam Cecil made a diving stop to stymie MC's Ryan Berryhill on the third attempt. Kyle Dickey converted the next opportunity to give UMHB a 3-2 lead. Both teams would covert the next attempt before the Choctaws' Nick Murry sent his attempt high and over the crossbar, ending the match.

The Cru took a 1-0 lead when Trevor Shoppach scored off an assist from Logan Nance in the 35th minute. It would stay 1-0 into the second half before Josh Barrera scored on a header in the 63rd minute to tie the match. Neither team could break through in the final 27 minutes of regulation or the two overtime periods. UMHB would have several good scoring chances, but could not connect.

Cecil finished with five saves in goal for UMHB. Joseph Fernandes had four saves in goal for Mississippi College. The Choctaws outshot the Cru 20-16 in the match.

UMHB now advances to the semifinals and will face tournament host U.T.-Tyler tomorrow at 11:00 AM. The winner will then move into the ASC Championship Match at 1:00 PM on Sunday. The ASC Tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Cru has now advanced to at least the semifinals in each of the past three ASC Tournaments.
