Lewisville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team could not overcome four sixth-inning errors and the Cru lost a 4-1 decision to U.T.-Tyler in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Thursday evening in Lewisville. UMHB gave up three runs in the inning to break open a tie game and the Cru never recovered.
The Patriots would take a 1-0 lead on Whitney Wyly's RBI single in the top of the first inning. UMHB tied the game in the bottom of the first when
Caitlin Bollier singled, move to second on
Megan Bohne's walk and scored on
Hannah White's RBI single. It would stay that way into the top of the sixth inning before the UMHB defense betrayed the Cru. A leadoff single and throwing error gave the Patriots a runner at second. Pinch-runner Kristin Anderson would score on another throwing error to break the tie and Wyly added a sacrifice fly to give U.T.-Tyler a 3-1 lead. Another UMHB error would lead to the final run of the frame as the Patriots took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Cru would put two runners on base with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but a pair of fielder's choices and a line out ended the threat. UMHB would also get the leadoff hitter on base in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push across a run.
UMHB's
Erica White was tagged with her second straight loss after starting the season 16-1. White surrendered six hits and three earned runs. She struck out eight and walked two. Stacy Shepherd earned the win for the Patriots and Katelyn Thomason picked up her second save of the year. Bollier and
Hannah White had two hits apiece for UMHB, but the rest of the team combined for just three hits. Lauren Robenalt had two of U.T.-Tyler's six hits in the game.
The Cru now drops into the loser's bracket and will face Hardin-Simmons University in an elimination game tomorrow at 11:00 AM. The Cowgirls lost a 6-1 decision to Mississippi College on Thursday. UMHB swept a four-game series from Hardin-Simmons in Belton two weeks ago. The winner of the UMHB-HSU game will move into another elimination game at 6:30 PM on Friday.
