Belton, TX – The McMurry University men's tennis team held off U.T.-Dallas with a three-set victory at #6 singles as the War Hawks posted a 5-4 victory over the Comets in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Belton. McMurry improves to 19-3 on the season with the victory. The loss ends the season for U.T.-Dallas at 10-5.
The Comets took a 2-1 lead through doubles with victories at #1 and #3. McMurry answered with victories at #1 singles, #5 singles and #3 singles to grab a 4-2 lead. The Comets answered by posting wins at #2 and then #4 singles to tie the match at four. Tony Williams of McMurry and Shrinath Kadamangudi of U.T.-Dallas split the first two sets to send it to a winner take all third set. Williams jumped out to a quick lead and then rolled to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory to clinch the match for the War Hawks.
McMurry will now advance to a 9:00 AM semifinal against East Division champion U.T.-Tyler tomorrow at Belton High School. UTD closes out the spring with the loss and the match and the playing careers of Comets seniors Brian Bittner, Clint Laukhuf and Sebastian Leitz also come to an end with the defeat.
