Belton, TX – The U.T.-Dallas women's tennis team took a lead through doubles and then posted three quick victories in singles to post a 5-1 victory over Sul Ross State in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Belton. The Comets improve to 8-6 on the spring with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 6-4 and ends the spring season for Sul Ross State.
U.T.-Dallas grabbed a 2-0 lead with wins at #2 and #3 doubles before the Sul Ross team of Lauren Ivey and Sandy Perales took an 8-6 win at #1 doubles. The Comets then took wins at #4, #3 and #6 singles to clinch the victory. The two teams had split sets at #1 and #2 singles and UTD was leading at #5 singles when the match was decided.
The Comets will now advance to a 1:00 PM semifinal against West Division champion and tournament host Mary Hardin-Baylor tomorrow at the Yvonne Li Tennis Center. Sul Ross saw its season come to an end and the loss also ends the careers of Lobo seniors Sandy Perales and Kristina Hernandez.
