Women's Golf tied for seventh place at NCAA Tournament

Angola, IN – The UMHB women's golf team put together a solid first round team total of 317 on a windy afternoon at the Zollner Golf Course and the UMHB women are tied for seventh place after the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championships Tuesday in Angola, Indiana. The Cru women trail first round leader Williams College by ten shots after the Ephs opened with a 307 team total. Fourteen-time defending national champion Methodist University fired a 310 total for second place. DePauw University and St. Olaf College are tied for third with 314, Wisconsin-Eau Claire is in fifth with 315, Whitman College holds down sixth place with a 316, and the Cru is tied with Centre College at 317.  George Fox University is in ninth place with a score of 318 and Allegheny rounds out the top ten with a 320 team score. There are 101 players at the tournament with 19 teams and six individuals competing.

The Cru women were paced by Kristen Cain's opening day 78. Cain is tied for 19th place individually. Victoria Thane fired a 79 and is tied for 25th place. Thane also provided the biggest highlight of the day, acing the par-3, 135-yard, sixth hole to record the first hole-in-one for a UMHB women's golfer in national tournament play. Taylor O'Rear and Kelly Gonyea both shot 80's to tie for 32nd place. Sara Eckert rounded out the five scores with an 83 and is tied for 64th place.  The individual leader is Georgiana Salant from Williams College with a score of even-par 72. 

"I think the girls did a great job today,” Cru head coach Darla Kirby said. “With such a young team, nerves were a factor, but I am proud of how they battled throughout the round.  We are in contention and only 10 shots back with a lot of golf to play.  I am looking forward to tomorrow's round."

The Lady Cru will start their second round on Wednesday morning with tee times beginning at 8:50am. The team will once again be paired with Washington-St. Louis and Wisconsin-Eau Claire. You can follow along with live scoring at www.golfstat.com/d3w.
 
The four-day, 72-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,990-yard layout at Zollner Golf Course. The UMHB women are making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championships and their eighth overall NCAA postseason appearance.
