Women's Golf climbs to fifth place at NCAA Tournament

Angola, IN -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team improved by two strokes as a team and two places overall in the NCAA Championship Tournament after the second round of competition at Zollner Golf Course on the Trine University campus on Wednesday.  The Lady Cru posted a 315 led by Kelly Gonyea and Victoria Thane's pair of 77's.  Kristen Cain posted an 80, Taylor O'Rear shot 81, and Sara Eckert finished with an 85.  The overall team leader is Methodist University who fired another 310 to post 620 for the first two rounds of the tournament.  DePauw University only trails by one stroke with a two day total of 621.  Wisconsin-Eau Claire was paced by the individual leader, Catherine Wagner, who shot a tournament low one under 71 to help her team move up the leader board into 3rd place.  Wagner's two round total of 149 gives her a two shot lead heading into the third round.  Williams College slipped from the first round lead to 4th, carding a team total of 323 in the second round for a two round total of 630.  UMHB is in 5th with a score of 632.  Centre College is in 6th at 636, Illinois Wesleyan is in 7th at 638, Allegheny is in 8th at 640, St. Olaf College is in 9th at 644, and rounding out the top ten is George Fox University with a team score of 647.
 
In the individual standings, Taylor Beaty of DePauw and Georgiana Salant of Williams College are tied for second with two round totals of 151.  Four players are tied for fourth at 152:  Emily Bachert of Centre College, Molly Erickson of St. Olaf College, Paige Gooch of DePauw University, and Rose Kelly of Illinois Wesleyan.  Alone in 8th place is Flora Weeks of Middlebury College with a score of 153.  In a tie for 9th with a total 154:  Sarah Paulson of Central College, Mary Snode of Mount Union, Jennifer Sullivan of Methodist University, and Kelly Sweeney of Whitman College.  The low Lady Cru golfer is Victoria Thane who is in a tie for 16th with a two round total of 156. Gonyea is tied for 21st with an 80-77=17 total, Cain is in a tie for 26th place with a 78-80=158, O'Rear's 80-81=161 is good for a tie for 39th place and Eckert is tied for 75th with an 83-85=168 total.
 
Head Coach Darla Kirby had this to say about her team:  “I'm very happy about our round today. Our goals for today were to play better and move up the board.  We accomplished that and hope to do the same tomorrow.  I'm just so proud of these girls and their determination.  We struggled early but they fought through and posted a good score.”
 
The Lady Cru will begin their third round tomorrow on the #1 tee with tee times beginning at 12:30.  UMHB will be paired with Centre College and Williams College.  You can follow live scoring of the event at www.golfstat.com/d3w.
 
The four-day, 72-hole event is being played on the par 72, 5,990-yard layout at Zollner Golf Course.  This is UMHB women's second straight appearance in the NCAA DIII Championship and their eighth overall NCAA postseason appearance.
