Belton, Texas – It came down to the final match and with a win at #3 singles, the Mississippi College women's tennis team posted a 5-4 victory over Texas Lutheran University in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Belton.
Texas Lutheran's Sofia Vega and Caitlin Zarr posted an 8-2 win at #1 doubles, but Mississippi College got wins from Abby Bassie and Allison Boyd at #2 doubles and from Victoria Clark and Katie Kema at #3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead. Kema won at #5 singles to make it 3-1 but TLU took wins from Zarr at #2 singles and Alicia Abell at #6 to tie the match at three. Bassie took a win at #4 singles but Vega's victory at #1 tied it again at 4-4. Shelby Wagner gritted out a 6-4, 6-4 win at #3 singles to give the Choctaws the victory.
Mississippi College improves to 8-6 on the year with the victory and will face U.T.-Dallas in a 10:00 AM Semifinal match on Saturday. The loss ends Texas Lutheran's season at 7-10.
