Belton, Texas - The University of Texas at Dallas men's tennis team made it a conference championship sweep as the Comets wrapped up their first American Southwest Conference title with a 5-2 win over U.T.-Tyler in the ASC Championship Match Sunday in Belton. U.T.-Dallas also clinches its first NCAA Division III National Championships berth with the win.
The Comets swept through doubles to grab a 3-0 lead. Casey Clark and Dustin Foster took #2 doubles 8-3 for the first point, Byron Cole and Bryan Leib won #3 doubles 8-4 to make it 2-0 Comets. Matt Davis and Dennis Roy closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at #1 doubles.
U.T.-Tyler's Daniel Brown won 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles and Ramon Martinez won #2 singles 6-3, 6-2 as the Patriots closed the gap to 3-2. Cole then won #4 singles 6-3, 7-6(5) to give U.T.-Dallas a 4-2 lead and Foster clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3 singles.
U.T.-Dallas improves to 14-4 with the victory and claims the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. With the Comet men and women both claiming conference championships, the same school has now won both titles for 12 straight years. U.T.-Tyler drops to 21-4 with the loss and had its streak of consecutive ASC Championships snapped at five.
Foster was named Most Outstanding Player in the Tournament. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Byron Cole, Matt Davis and Bryan Leib. Daniel Brown and Ramon Martinez represented U.T.-Tyler on the All-Tournament Team and Mississippi College's Matthew Martin and UMHB's
Will Summers were also selected.
