Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s and women’s basketball teams both placed players on the American Southwest Conference Winter Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams released today. Kellie Thomas represents the UMHB women while Zane Johnston was the men’s team representative on the conference academic honor squad.
Kellie Thomas is a senior forward and four-year letterwinner for the Cru women from New Braunfels High School. She is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and also earned ASC All-West Division honors twice. This is Thomas’ third appearance on the ASC Winter Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team and she helped lead the UMHB women to the first ASC West Division title in school history this season.
Zane Johnston is a senior guard and four-year letterman for the Cru from Albany High School. He is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and also earned ASC All-West Division honors twice and also claimed a spot on the ASC West Division All-Defensive Team this season. Johnston played for two ASC Championship Teams during his UMHB career and played for three NCAA Division III National Championship qualifiers. He also broke the ASC record for career games played this season when he pushed his total to 114 games. Johnston is making his second appearance on the ASC Winter Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team.
U.T.-Dallas swept the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete awards for men’s and women’s basketball. Senior point guard Chelsea Edwards was named Women’s Basketball Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. Senior guard Scott Rodgers was voted Men’s Basketball Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.
The ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team is in its third academic year and recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the Sports Information Directors from the conference’s 15 member institutions vote on a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete from each sport.
