Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will open the 2009 season with a 6:00 PM non-conference game at Southern Nazarene University this Saturday, September 12
th, in Bethany, Oklahoma. The Cru will enter the game ranked 3
rd in the country by D3football.com and UMHB is looking for win #100 in the program's history. The Cru has posted a 99-29 mark through the first 11 seasons of play, including a 13-7 record in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Crimson Storm will bring a 1-0 record into Saturday's game after knocking off St. Mary (KS) University 42-28 last Saturday in Leavenworth, Kansas. UMHB won last year's meeting between the two teams 30-7 to take a 1-0 lead in the all-time series. This will be the first time that the Cru football team will have played a game in the state of Oklahoma and UMHB is looking to get off to a great start and improve on the team's 8-3 record in season-opening games.
“Right now, our goal is to go out and win our first game,” Cru head coach
Pete Fredenburg said. “We've got some great leaders and some really talented players. But we've still got a lot of work to do and some things we need to do to develop some chemistry to get where we want to go.”
UMHB returns 40 lettermen, six offensive starters and six defensive starters this season. The Cru went 12-2 overall last season and won its fourth straight American Southwest Conference Championship with an 8-0 league record. UMHB advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Championships for the second year in a row and third time overall. Following the SNU game, the Cru will open ASC play with a 6:00 PM kickoff at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin on September 19th.
