Bethany, OK – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team shook off heavy downpours to rain on Southern Nazarene University's home opener and the Cru rolled to a 42-7 victory over the Crimson Storm Saturday night in Bethany, Oklahoma. UMHB is now 1-0 to start the season and the Cru picked up win #100 in the program's history on the first game of the 12th season of UMHB football. The loss drops Southern Nazarene to 1-1 on the season.
UMHB forced a three-and-out on Southern Nazarene's opening possession. After a bad snap led to a short punt, Quincy Daniels exploded for a 32-yard touchdown run on the Cru's first offensive play to give UMHB a 7-0 lead just 1:59 into the game. It was Daniels first carry in a game since suffering a season-ending knee injury on the first offensive play of last season's conference opener for the Cru. Another bad snap gave UMHB great field possession on its next drive and Daniels bulled over from two yards out to make it 14-0 Cru after just two offensive plays. Kyle Noack would add a 19-yard touchdown run just two plays after he was shaken up by a vicious sideline hit. LiDarral Bailey added a nine-yard TD run for his first collegiate TD to give the Cru a 28-0 edge with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. It would stay that way into halftime before Noack hit Trey Hazelton with a 24-yard TD pass 1:57 into the second half to make it 35-0 and the lead would grow to 42-0 on Desmond Mays' one-yard TD plunge with 9:58 left in the third quarter. Southern Nazarene would score its only touchdown on Brady Wardlaw's 10-yard TD toss to Travis Boyd early in the fourth quarter.
Rickie Williams led the Cru with 83 rushing yards on 11 carries and Daniels added 71 yards on 10 attempts. Noack was 6-9 for 96 yards and a TD. Pi'Dadro Davis and Brian Scott had two catches apiece to lead the Cru receiving corps. The Cru rolled up 447 yards of total offense with 326 of that coming on the ground. The UMHB defense held SNU to 30 yards rushing and 223 yards of total offense. Both teams turned the ball over three times on a sloppy, wet field. Wardlaw was 16-33 passing for 193 yards and a score and he also ran 22 times for 42 times. Kristen Leverett led the UMHB defense with eight tackles and the Cru also posted five sacks.
“It was an awesome way to start the game, scoring twice on our first two plays and it was even more special because it was Quincy,” Cru head coach Pete Fredenburg said. “And I was so impressed that we had so many people come to the game in this kind of weather. We saw that we have some really good players and some of them really stepped up tonight.”
The Cru will now open American Southwest Conference play next Saturday in Seguin. UMHB and the Bulldogs will kick off at 6:00 PM. TLU fell in its season opener tonight 22-21 to Trinity University.
