Clinton, MS – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not find an answer for the Mississippi College offense as the Cru dropped an 11-3 decision to the Choctaws in an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament First Round Series Saturday in Clinton, Mississippi. The Choctaws sweep the series and improve to 34-7 overall on the season. Mississippi College will now move on to the second round of the ASC Tournament next weekend. The loss ends UMHB's season at 22-19 overall. The Cru has now lost to the Choctaws on the road in the first round of the ASC Tournament in three straight seasons.
Mississippi College would take a 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of the first and second innings.
Josh Shaw's solo home run would pull the Cru to within 2-1 in the bottom of the second. The Choctaws would add a run on Dakota Bodree's RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1. The teams would then wait out an hour-long rain delay in the fifth inning before returning to play. MC would put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh with Brannon Walls driving in two of those runs with a single. The Choctaws would add four more in the top of the ninth, with Chase Herrin's two-run triple being the biggest hit of the inning. UMHB would cut it to 11-3 on
Andrew White's RBI single and a run-scoring error in the bottom of the ninth inning, but that's as close as the Cru would get.
Cameron Arnett took the loss for UMHB to drop to 6-6 after giving up six runs on 10 hits in six and a third innings. Arnett struck out three and walked five. Ian Underwood picked up the win for MC to move to 4-0 after scattering six hits and allowing just one run in six innings.
Joseph Villegas and White had three hits apiece for UMHB, but the rest of the line-up combined for just three hits. Stuart Magee had four hits for the Choctaws and Herrin added three hits and three RBI for MC in the victory.
