RICHARDSON, Texas ---- Greg Weghorst, who has served as the Director of Media Relations for the American Southwest Conference since August 2006, will assume the Assistant Commissioner title on July 1, 2010.
The title change is the result of ASC Council of Presidents approval to redefine the position with designation as Assistant Commissioner and the addition of administrative and governance responsibilities to media relations duties associated with the conference office role.
"The redefinition of this staff position is a reflection on the evolution of the duties performed by the second member of the ASC staff," Commissioner Amy Carlton said. "In addition to media relations, the Assistant Commissioner handles the sport and special awards programs, championship event administration and serves as a co-advisor to the conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee."
Weghorst has coordinated the conference-wide "Make a Change in 14 Days" campaign, helping the member's Student-Athlete Advisory Committees raise nearly $28,000 to benefit local community organizations in the four years of the loose change collection effort. Weghorst worked with Internet Consulting Services (ICS) in the successful redesign and launch of the www.ASCsports.org website; served as tournament director for the ASC Men's and Women's Golf and Softball Championships and the First Pitch Softball Tournament; and supervised design and production of the annual ASC Champion T-shirt program.
Weghorst is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators (NADIIIAA).
A Waco, Texas, native, Weghorst is a 2003 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications/journalism. Before joining the ASC staff, he was a sports writer with the Temple Daily Telegram and covered UMHB, Central Texas Blackhawks/Marshals of the North American Hockey League and Temple-area high schools. He and his wife, Casey, and daughter, Tatum, reside in Frisco, Texas.
