Clinton, MS – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team never recovered from Mississippi College's nine-run sixth inning and the Cru dropped a 19-4 decision to the Choctaws Friday night in Clinton, Mississippi. UMHB falls to 1-6 on the season with the loss. Mississippi College improves to 3-3 on the year with the win.
The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead on
Seth Lynn's RBI single in the top of the second inning. The Choctaws answered with one in the bottom of the third to tie the game, but UMHB retook the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Braden Embry scored on an error for the first run and Lynn singled home
Seth Mogavero with the second to give the Cru a 3-1 lead. Mississippi College again had an answer, tying the game at three with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Choctaws then took advantage of two hits, four walks and a pair of UMHB errors to put together a four-run fifth inning for a 7-3 lead. The Cru would get one of the runs back on
Ricky Brenek's bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth, but Mississippi College put the game out of reach with the nine-run bottom of the frame. J'Marcus Brooks had a two-run double and Taylor Cloyd added a three-run homer for the biggest hits in the inning. MC would add two more runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to provide the final margin.
Cameron Graham took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1 on the season after giving up five earned runs in four and a third innings. Lynn had two hits and a pair of RBI for UMHB, but the Cru managed just six hits off three Choctaw pitchers. Stephen Byrd earned the win for Mississippi College after giving up six hits and three earned runs in six innings of work. Kyle Ladner had four hits for the Choctaws and Mike Kerdock, Spencer Brunson and Stuart Magee added three hits apiece.
The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Frierson Field. The Cru will then continue its road swing with a 7:00 PM single game at Trinity University next Tuesday night in San Antonio.
