Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could generate enough offense to overcome an early deficit as the Cru dropped a 10-1 decision to Texas Wesleyan in the 2011 season opener Tuesday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 0-1 on the season. The Rams improve to 2-1 on the year with the victory.

The Rams grabbed a 2-0 lead when Jason Holmes blooped a single into right field to score a pair of runs in the top of the second. Eric Epperson's single made it 3-0 in the top of the third and Texas Wesleyan would add three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one run in the eighth to make it 9-0. UMHB would score its only run on Tim Yan's RBI infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Rams would add another run in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin. The Cru was hitless into the sixth inning before Chris Joshlin lined a clean single up the middle. UMHB also left the bases loaded after three walks in the bottom of the second inning.

The Cru finished with five hits, from five different hitters. Sam VanHoozer took the loss for UMHB after giving up two hits and two runs in two innings of work. Six different pitchers threw for the Cru and combined for eight strikeouts. Holmes was 3-4 with three RBI for Texas Wesleyan and Justin Padron and Taylor Jockers had two hits apiece. Derek Vaughan earned the win for the Rams to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The threat of cold weather has also forced a pair of schedule changes for the Cru. Tomorrow's game at Southwestern University has been postponed and may be rescheduled. UMHB will return to action with a three-game series at U.T.-Tyler this weekend. That series will start with a single game at 4:00 PM on Friday. The start time for that game has been moved up two hours because of the potential for cold weather Friday night. The two teams will then close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
