Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a pair of three-run innings to take control of the game as the Cru posted a 9-5 victory over Robert Morris University Friday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 4-7 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 on the year.
RMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Jack Murphy's RBI single. UMHB tied the game in the bottom of the second when
Reinaldo Araujo singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. The Cru would then grab the lead with a three-run third. Araujo singled home the first run and
Seth Lynn added a two-run single to make it 4-1. The Eagles cut it to 4-2 with a run in the fourth, but the Cru answered with
Zach Crosswhite's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. RMU scored two in the top of the sixth on James Kolker's two-run single, but the Cru once again answered, this time with another three-run inning in the bottom of the frame.
Zach Young doubled home the first two runs and scored the third on
Josh Fredrick's single to make it 8-4. RMU would add a run in the top of the seventh, but Fredrick ripped a solo homer down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth. The Eagles would load the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but
Sam VanHoozer came in and retired RMU on a strikeout and fly out for his first save of the season.
Young was 4-5 for the Cru with two RBI and two runs scored. Fredrick and Crosswhite added three hits apiece and Araujo had two hits for UMHB.
Cameron Graham evened his record at 1-1 for the Cru with seven innings of seven-hit pitching. Graham allowed four earned runs, struck out three and walked four. Ryan Miller took the loss for RMU to drop to 0-1. Tim Ryan and Marty Coyle had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. The Cru will then continue its home stand with a 2:00 PM non-conference game against Austin College next weekend. UMHB will open American Southwest Conference West Division play with a three-game home series against Hardin-Simmons University next weekend.
