Baseball beats Texas Wesleyan 8-2

Fort Worth, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team broke open a close game with a four-run seventh inning and the Cru went on to an 8-2 victory over Texas Wesleyan University Tuesday afternoon in Fort Worth. UMHB evens its record at 14-14 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Rams to 26-16 on the year.
 
The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead on Braden Embry's RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. UMHB would take advantage of four unearned runs to break the game open in the top of the seventh. Reinaldo Araujo and Garrett Kinney both scored on errors, Josh Fredrick drove in a run with a fielder's choice grounder and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. TWU cut it to 5-2 on Taylor Jockers' two-run single in the bottom of the inning, but UMHB added three more in the top of the ninth to put it out of reach. Zach Young drove in the first run with an RBI fielder's choice and Embry added a two-run double to close out the scoring. Sam VanHoozer set the Rams down in order in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the victory.
 
Embry finished with three hits and three RBI for the Cru. Araujo added two hits for UMHB. Danny Horstman pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one to pick up his first collegiate victory. Five UMHB pitchers combined on a six-hitter for the Cru and struck out eight batters. Andrew Cooper took the loss to drop to 1-1 after giving up four hits and a run in four innings of work.
 
The Cru will return to American Southwest Conference West Division action with a three-game series at Concordia Texas this weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday night before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
