Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome Texas Wesleyan's eight-run sixth inning as the Cru dropped a 13-0 decision to the Rams in the first on-campus home night game in the program's history Tuesday in Belton. UMHB is now 0-1 to start the season. Texas Wesleyan improves to 5-0 on the year with the victory.
The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings. The Rams finally broke through for three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Joseph Lassiter's two-run home run. Texas Wesleyan would erupt for eight more in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Rams used four hits, two errors and four walks to put together the big inning. TWU added two more runs in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin.
Chance Ryan struck out five batters and did not allow a hit in two innings of work for UMHB.
Taylor Burrow took the loss despite striking out five and not giving up a hit in two and a third innings. Six different pitchers combined to strike out 18 batters for the Cru, but UMHB also walked 10 and gave up 12 hits. Six different players had hits for UMHB, but no hitter had more than one.
Jacob Lyons earned the win for TWU after giving up four hits and striking out two in five innings. Lassiter, Christian Soberanes and Andrew Coleman all had two hits apiece for the Rams and Lassiter drove in four runs.
The Cru will return to action with a 2:00 PM single game at Southwestern University in Georgetown on Friday. Those same two teams will then turn around and play a noon doubleheader in Belton on Saturday.
