Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a pair of two-run innings to open up a tight game and the Cru posted a 5-2 game two victory to salvage a doubleheader split with Southwestern University Tuesday afternoon in Belton. UMHB lost game one by that same 5-2 score. The Cru moves to 4-3 overall on the season following the split. Southwestern is now 3-7 on the year.
The Cru battled back from a 2-1 deficit with a pair of two-run innings in the 5-2 game two victory. UMHB took a 1-0 lead on a Joseph Villegas RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Charlie Garrett doubled home a pair of unearned runs for the Pirates in the top of the second to give Southwestern a 2-1 lead. UMHB answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Josh Fredrick had an RBI groundout and Charles Oddo added an RBI fielder's choice to give the Cru a 3-2 lead. Alfredo Melendez added an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth and Oddo scored on a balk to make it 5-2 UMHB. The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but Oddo used a strike out and groundout to end the threat and nail down his first save of the season. Cameron Arnett (2-1) earned the win for the Cru, scattering two hits, striking out five and walking five in six innings of work. Eric Kegley took the loss for Southwestern to drop to 0-2 on the year. Villegas, Andrew White and Chris Joshlin had two hits apiece for UMHB in the victory.

UMHB could not overcome Southwestern's four runs in the final two frames in a 5-2 loss in game one. A run-scoring fielding error gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Southwestern stretched it to 3-0 on John Wooten's RBI single and an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the sixth. The Cru would cut the lead to 3-2 on Ryan Moreau's RBI single and Kyle Flynn's bases loaded walk. But UMHB would leave the bases loaded. Patrick Keenan blasted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2 and UMHB could not answer in the bottom of the seventh. The Cru stranded nine runners in the loss. Jared Hopper took the loss for UMHB to drop to 1-1. He scattered seven hits, struck out six and allowed just three earned runs in seven innings. Matt Stuart earned the win for Southwestern to move to 2-1 on the year and Aaron Garza notched his first save of the season. Keenan was 3-4 for Southwestern and finished a triple short of the cycle. Six different UMHB players had hits, but no player had more than one for the Cru.

The Cru will have a week off before returning to action with another home, non-conference game. UMHB will host Southwestern Assemblies of God University for a 2:00 PM single game next Tuesday, February 23rd at Red Murff Field.
