Georgetown, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team broke open a tight game with a four-run fifth inning as the Cru went on to a 4-1 victory over Southwestern University to close out a doubleheader sweep of the Pirates Saturday in Georgetown. The Cru won the opener of the double dip 5-2. UMHB is now 2-0 on the season. The Pirates fall to 4-4 on the year with the two losses.
The Cru hit a pair of home runs in that four-run fifth inning to break open game two on the way to a 4-1 victory.
Kirstie Curry doubled home the first run for the Cru and came around to score on
Jordan Schrutka's two-run homer.
Brittany Moreno added a solo shot for her first collegiate home run later in the inning to make it 4-0 UMHB. It would stay that way until the Pirates scored in the bottom of the sixth and Cru pitcher
Erica White pitched her way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win. White scattered nine hits and struck out six in a complete-game victory for the Cru. Moreno and
Jessica Oliver had two hits apiece to lead the UMHB offense in the victory.
The Cru managed just two hits in the first game, but took advantage of seven walks and three errors to post a 5-2 victory. Southwestern would grab a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. UMHB would take the lead with a three-run fourth inning. The first two runs scored on a throwing error and
Courtney Johnston added a sacrifice fly to chase home the go-ahead run. The Cru added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Caitlin Bollier doubled home two runs to make it a 5-2 UMHB lead.
Kelsey Greeson made it stand up getting a double play and a groundout in the bottom of the frame to end it. Greeson scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out three in a complete game performance for the Cru.
The Cru will now return home for the 2010 home opener next Saturday. UMHB will welcome Louisiana College to Dee Dillon Field for a 2:00 PM doubleheader that day.
