Pineville, LA – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team pounded out 29 hits and scored 24 runs in a doubleheader against Louisiana College Sunday, but that was only good enough for one victory as the two teams played a pair of slugfests in Pineville. The Cru lost game one 14-11, but won the second game 13-11 to take two out of three games in the weather-delayed weekend series. The Cru is now 6-4 overall on the season. Louisiana College is 3-6 on the year.
The Cru could not overcome LC's six-run fifth inning in that 14-11 game one loss. The Wildcats took advantage of a walk, four hits, an error and a wild pitch to build a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. UMHB fought back with four runs in the top of the second.
Seth Lynn opened the scoring with a two-run homer and
Joseph Villegas added a two-run single. UMHB took a 5-4 lead on a throwing error in the top of the fourth. But the Wildcats grabbed the lead back with that six-run fifth. Cody Laprarie's three-run double was the biggest hit in the inning. The Cru closed to within 10-9 on
Chris Joshlin's grand slam in the top of the sixth, but the Wildcats added four more in the bottom of the frame to make it 14-9.
Andrew White's two-run homer would pull the Cru to within 14-11 in the top of the seventh, but that's as close as the Cru would get.
Villegas became UMHB's all-time leader in runs batted in with that two run single. Villegas now has 125 RBI in his career, breaking the previous mark of 124 set by Stacy Bishop.
Alfredo Melendez had four hits for the Cru and White, Joshlin and Lynn all added two hits apiece.
Andy Evans took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1 on the year.
UMHB jumped on top early in game two and then added a three-run sixth to hold on for a 13-11 victory. The Cru took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Villegas singled home two runs,
Josh Fredrick and
Ryan Moreau added RBI doubles and Lynn and
Doak Fleming had RBI groundouts. The Wildcats cut it to 6-2 in the bottom of the first, but UMHB added two runs on Joshlin's RBI single and a run-scoring error in the top of the second. White's RBI groundout in the third make it 9-2 before LC scored five in the bottom of the fourth. Another error gave the Cru a 10-7 lead in the top of the fifth and the Cru added some breathing room with three more in the sixth. Another throwing error scored the first run and Melendez added a two-run single. LC would score three in the bottom of the sixth and another run in the bottom of the seventh before
Charles Oddo pitched his way out of it to preserve the victory.
Chance Ryan picked up his first collegiate victory for the Cru with five solid innings to start and Oddo picked up his third save of the season. Melendez had three hits for UMHB and White, Fredrick, Joshlin and Moreau all had two hits apiece.
The Cru will continue its road trip with a 6:00 PM single game at Southwestern University Tuesday night in Georgetown. UMHB will then return home to host U.T.-Dallas for a three-game series next weekend at Red Murff Field.
