Georgetown, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead and the Cru pitching staff made sure it stood up in a 7-0 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday night in Georgetown. UMHB improves to 7-4 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 3-13 on the year.
The Cru took a 1-0 lead when
Ryan Swindell's squeeze bunt scored
Josh Fredrick in the top of the second inning. UMHB stretched the lead to 3-0 when
Alfredo Melendez scored on a throwing error and
Joseph Villegas added a sacrifice fly. The Cru added three more runs in the sixth inning to open up a 6-0 edge.
Josh Shaw was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run.
Andrew White added a bases loaded walk and Villegas singled home the final run of the inning.
Ryan Moreau's RBI single in the top of the ninth provided the final run of the game.
Five UMHB pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the Cru's first shutout of the season in the victory.
David Keil earned the victory to raise his record to 1-0 on the year. Keil scattered two hits and struck out two in three innings of work.

Kendall Kusak all pitched well for the Cru in the win, too. Villegas and Moreau had two hits apiece for UMHB and Villegas also drove in two runs. Marc Brace took the loss for Southwestern to drop to 0-1 on the year. Brace gave up three runs on two hits in two innings of work.
UMHB will now return home for a three-game series with U.T.-Dallas this weekend. The Cru will host the Comets for a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before the two teams close out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Red Murff Field.
