Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fought back from an early deficit, but the Cru could not push the tying run across in the ninth inning in a 3-2 loss to Texas Lutheran University Friday afternoon in Belton. UMHB falls to 11-12 overall and 3-4 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The Bulldogs move to 18-6 overall and 5-2 in the ASC on the season with the victory.
The game was pitcher's duel between UMHB's Chance Ryan and TLU ace Brad Orosey through the first four innings. The Bulldogs would break open a scoreless game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Nokelby singled home the first run and scored on Cody Miller's RBI double. TLU would stretch the lead to 3-0 on Clay Childress' sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. UMHB loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but managed just one run on Ryan Moreau's sacrifice fly to cut it to 3-1. It would stay that way into the bottom of the ninth, when Andrew White led off with a solo home run for the Cru to cut the lead to 3-2. After a flyout, Chris Joshlin was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on first. Seth Lynn followed with a shot up the middle that TLU second baseman Andrew Femath stopped with a dive to start a spectacular double play to end the game and preserve the victory for the Bulldogs.

Ryan took the loss to drop to 2-1 on the season after scattering 10 hits and three runs over eight innings of work. He struck out three and walked five. Orosey was dominant, especially early for the Bulldogs. He took a perfect game into the sixth inning before Josh Fredrick led off with an infield single. Orosey finished with a complete-game, six-hitter, striking out ten and walking just one to raise his record to 8-0.

White was 2-4 for the Cru and he had two of the six hits for UMHB. Femath, Miller, Chris Green and Evan Curtis had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then hit the road for a three-game series at Schreiner University next Thursday and Friday.
