Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team held off a late Texas Lutheran rally for a game one victory, but the Cru could not answer the Bulldogs offensive explosion in game two as the two teams split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one 5-4 before falling 17-10 in the nightcap. The Cru is now 12-13 overall and 4-5 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. Texas Lutheran moves to 19-7 overall and 6-3 in the ASC on the season with the split.
UMHB used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead and then held off TLU's seventh-inning rally for a 5-4 game one win. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Chris Green led off the game with a solo home run and Clay Childress added an RBI double. UMHB would cut it to 2-1 when
Andrew White scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. The Cru then put four runs on the board in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
Ryan Swindell singled home the tying run to start the scoring,
Alfredo Melendez gave UMHB a lead with an RBI groundout and White added a two-run double to close out the scoring in the frame. TLU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh and Clay Childress walked with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 5-3. Jason McGill dropped a wind-blown single into right field to make it 5-4, but
Adrian Montoya coaxed a foul-out from Evan Curtis and then struck out pinch-hitter D.J. Haines looking at a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Montoya picked up his first save of the season in relief of starter
Jared Hopper. Hopper raised his record to 4-1 on the season with six and a third innings of nine-hit pitching. Hopper allowed three earned runs, struck out four and walked two. Sean Madden (1-1) took the loss for TLU after giving up three runs in relief.
Josh Fredrick had two hits for the Cru. Childress, McGill and Andrew Femath had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.
TLU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back on the way to a 17-10 win in game two. The Bulldogs used three hits and two UMHB errors to put together a four-run top of the second. TLU added two in the third before
Joseph Villegas hit an RBI triple to cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth, but
Doak Fleming and
Kyle Flynn had back-to-back RBI doubles for UMHB as the Cru cut it to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth. TLU used a Darwin Lucero RBI double and Cody Miller's two-run homer to stretch it to 10-3 in the sixth, but
Josh Fredrick added a two-run homer and Villegas had an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 10-6. Green's three-run homer gave TLU a 13-6 lead in the seventh and Childress hit a two-run homer to highlight a four-run top of the eighth as the Bulldogs opened up a 17-6 lead. UMHB added three runs in the eighth on RBI doubles from
Josh Shaw and Villegas and a run-scoring passed ball and Fredrick tripled and scored on Fleming's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to provide the final margin.
Cameron Arnett took the loss for UMHB to fall to 3-4 while Travis Staggs raised his record to 4-1 with the win for TLU. Villegas was 4-5 with three RBI for the UMHB and Flynn added three hits. Childress and Miller had three hits and three RBI apiece for the Bulldogs.
UMHB will return to action with a three-game ASC West Division series at Schreiner University next week in Kerrville. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM single game on Thursday before closing out the week with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Friday.
