Kerrville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team took control of game two with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings and the Cru went on to win 6-2 to salvage a doubleheader split with Schreiner University Thursday afternoon in Kerrville. UMHB lost game one 2-0 after giving up a pair of unearned runs. The Cru is now 13-14 overall and 5-6 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. Schreiner moves to 4-25 overall and 2-9 in the ASC West on the year following the split.
UMHB took control of game two with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh on the way to a 6-2 victory. Chris Joshlin gave the Cru a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Schreiner tied it in the bottom of the second, before UMHB put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Ryan Moreau and Josh Fredrick singled home runs for the Cru in the inning. UMHB added two more in the top of the seventh on Joseph Villegas' RBI single and Joshlin's sacrifice fly. Villegas added another RBI single in the top of the ninth to make it 6-1 and Adrian Montoya pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth after Schreiner cut it to 6-2 to nail down his second save of the season. Cameron Arnett scattered 10 hits over eight and a third innings to raise his record to 4-4 for the Cru. Arnett struck out five and walked just one. Montoya struck out two and walked one over two-thirds of an inning for the save. Villegas had two of UMHB's eight hits in the victory.

The Cru could not generate enough offense to overcome the two unearned runs in a 2-0 game one loss. Jared Hopper and J.P. Garcia locked up in a pitcher's duel for the first five innings before the Mountaineers took advantage of two hits, an error and a passed ball to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. That would be all Garcia would need as he held the Cru to just three hits in seven hits, striking out four and walking two to raise his record to 2-0. Hopper took a tough-luck loss after scattering four hits over six innings. He struck out eight and walked two and did not give up an earned run while dropping to 4-2 on the year.

The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM single game tomorrow in Kerrville. UMHB will then continue its road swing with a non-conference game at Trinity University Tuesday night in San Antonio.
