Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a pair of dominating pitching performances and more than enough offense to post a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State University Thursday afternoon in Alpine. UMHB won game one 8-0 and took game two by an identical 8-0 score. The Cru improves to 16-12 overall and 12-0 in American Southwest Conference play on the season with the two victories. UMHB also takes over sole possession of first place in the ASC West Division. Sul Ross State falls to 1-29 overall and 1-15 in ASC play with the two losses.
UMHB broke open the first game with a four-run fifth inning on the way to an 8-0 victory.
Jordan Schrutka's RBI single gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Sara Roman opened the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single and she scored on
Kelsey Greeson's RBI double.
Jessica Oliver doubled home Greeson and came around to score on
Megan Bohne's sacrifice fly. Oliver added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-0 UMHB and the Cru added two more runs in the top of the seventh on
Hannah White's RBI single and
Erica Salazar's sacrifice fly. Oliver had three hits to lead the UMHB offense and Greeson and
Brittany Moreno added two hits apiece for the Cru. White threw a complete-game, five-hitter for UMHB to raise her record to 3-3. White struck out eight and walked just one.
The Cru scored eight runs over the final three innings and that was more than enough as
Kelsey Greeson tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 game two victory. The game was scoreless into the top of the fifth before Greeson hit a sacrifice fly and another run scored on an error to make it 2-0 Cru.
Austin McCormick added a sacrifice fly and UMHB used another run-scoring error to make it 4-0 in the top of the sixth. The Cru then added four more runs in the top of the seventh.
Megan Bohne singled home the first run, Salazar added a sacrifice fly,
Courtney Johnston doubled home a run and
Kaysie Creech singled home the final run. Greeson moves to 6-5 on the season after tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked two.
Brittany Moreno had three hits for UMHB and Bohne, Johnston, McCormick and Creech added two hits apiece.
UMHB will now return home to host Texas Lutheran University for a four-game ASC West Division series next weekend. The Cru and Bulldogs will open the series with a 2:00 PM doubleheader next Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Dee Dillon Field.
