Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a pair of solid pitching performances and just enough offense to win both games to post a doubleheader sweep of Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one 5-1 and won game two 5-0 and the Cru clinched a berth in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament with the two victories. UMHB improves to 20-12 overall and 16-0 in ASC West Division play with the sweep. Texas Lutheran falls to 9-21 overall and 3-13 in the ASC with the two losses.
UMHB took control of game one with five runs in the middle of the game and held on for a 5-1 victory.
Caitlin Bollier's RBI double in the bottom of the third gave UMHB a 1-0 lead and Bollier came around to score on
Megan Bohne's single to make it 2-0 Cru.
Kelsey Greeson added an RBI single in the fourth and UMHB added another run on an error to take a 4-0 lead. TLU cut it to 4-1 on Nicole Hatley's RBI triple in the top of the fifth, but the Cru answered with Greeson's RBI infield single in the bottom of the inning.
Erica White shut down the Bulldogs from there to raise her record to 8-3 on the season. White scattered seven hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Greeson and Bollier had two hits apiece for the Cru. Hatley had three of TLU's seven hits in the game.
UMHB then grabbed an early lead and never looked back in a 5-0 game two victory.
Jordan Schrutka walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to give the Cru a 1-0 lead.
Hannah White led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run and Bollier added an RBI single to push the UMHB lead to 3-0. It would stay that way into the bottom of the sixth before
Dana Criswell's pinch-hit double brought home two runs to give the Cru a 5-0 and that was more than enough for
Hannah White. White (4-3) scattered three hits and struck out two before giving way to
Ariel Kemmerer for two-thirds of an inning of hitless relief. Bollier, Bohne and Greeson all had two hits apiece for UMHB. Megan Carmichael had two of TLU's three hits.
UMHB will now travel to Abilene for a crucial four-game series at Hardin-Simmons University next weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM doubleheader on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday. The Cru will enter that series with a two-game lead over the Cowgirls in the ASC West Division.
