Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team broke open a tight game with a seven-run seventh inning and the Cru rolled to an 11-2 victory over Howard Payne University Sunday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB improves to 18-16 overall and 9-7 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 15-18 overall and 4-12 in ASC play on the season.
Howard Payne took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Cru answered with an RBI single from
Joseph Villegas in the top of the second inning. It would stay 1-1 into the seventh before the Cru put the game out of reach. Villegas started the scoring with an RBI triple and came in to score on an error.
Chris Joshlin added an RBI double,
Seth Lynn bunted home a run,
Ryan Moreau followed with an RBI single, the sixth run scored on another error and Villegas closed it out with an RBI double to give the Cru an 8-1 lead.
Alfredo Melendez added a two-run triple in the top of the ninth and Villegas drove him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-1. The Yellow Jackets would add one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Villegas was 3-5 for the Cru with four RBI and Moreau and
Josh Fredrick also had three hits apiece for UMHB. Joshlin added two hits as the Cru pounded out 13 base hits in the game.
Chance Ryan tossed a complete-game, eight-hitter for the Cru to raise his record to 4-2 on the season. Ryan struck out six and walked just three in the win.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow. UMHB will then return home to host Southwestern Assemblies of God University for a 2:00 PM non-conference game on Tuesday to close out a stretch of four games in three days.
