Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a four-run fourth inning to break open a tight game and the Cru held on for a game two victory to salvage a doubleheader split with Hardin-Simmons University Sunday in Abilene. UMHB won game two 5-3 after HSU took game one by an 8-3 count. The Cru is now 21-13 overall and 17-1 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Cowgirls move to 22-7 overall and 15-3 in the ASC West on the season following the split.
HSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two before the Cru tied the game on Jessica Oliver's RBI single in the top of the third. UMHB pushed it to 5-1 with four runs in the top of the fourth. Kelsey Greeson opened the scoring with an RBI single and Oliver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive the second run. Caitlin Bollier added a two-run single to make it 5-1 UMHB. The Cowgirls cut it to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Lacie Cole's RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice. Cru pitcher Erica White would shut down the Cowgirls from there to nail down the victory. White tossed a complete-game, seven-hitter to raise her record to 9-3. White struck out four and walked just one for the Cru. Oliver, Bollier and Megan Bohne had two hits apiece to lead the UMHB offense. HSU starter Sarah Shurbet took her first loss of the season in the circle for the Cowgirls to drop to 6-1 after giving up eight hits and five runs in three and two-thirds innings.

The Cru never bounced back from HSU's four-run second inning in an 8-3 game one loss. Bohne's RBI groundout gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. HSU tied it in the bottom of the first before UMHB added two runs in the top of the second on Kaysie Creech's RBI single and a run-scoring error. The Cowgirls answered with four in the bottom of the second on five hits and an error to take a 5-3 lead. HSU then added three more in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Greeson took the loss for the Cru to drop to 7-6 on the season. The Cru managed just five hits against HSU starter Megann Lewis (11-4).

The two teams will close out the series with a 2:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Abilene. UMHB will then close out the regular season with four games against Concordia Texas next Thursday and Saturday.
