Kerrville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead and then held on for a 9-6 victory over Schreiner University Friday afternoon in Kerrville. The Cru improves to 14-14 overall and 6-6 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the victory. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 4-26 overall and 2-10 in ASC West Division play.
Ryan Moreau's RBI single gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Andrew White's sacrifice fly and
Joseph Villegas' RBI single made it 3-0 UMHB in the top of the second. White added a solo homer in the top of the fourth to give the Cru a 4-0 lead. Schreiner cut it to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Doak Fleming's sacrifice fly in the fifth and
Chris Joshlin's RBI single in the top of the sixth gave the Cru a 6-2 lead. Schreiner would cut it to 6-5 with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Cru answered with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Kyle Flynn, Villegas and Joshlin all had RBI singles for UMHB in the frame. The Mountaineers would score a single run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 9-6, but
David Keil pitched a hitless eighth and ninth inning to nail down the victory for the Cru.
Keil picked up his first save of the year in relief with two and two-thirds innings of one-hit pitching.
Chance Ryan went five and a third innings for the Cru to raise his record to 3-1. Ryan allowed just two earned runs and seven hits while striking out five. Joshlin and
Seth Lynn had three hits apiece for UMHB and Villegas, White, Flynn and
Josh Shaw all had two hits for the Cru in a 16-hit outburst.
The Cru will travel to San Antonio Tuesday for a 7:00 PM non-conference game at Trinity University. UMHB will then return home to host Concordia Texas for a three-game ASC West Division series next weekend. The Cru will take on the Tornados in a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before the two teams close out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Red Murff Field.
