Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team exploded for an eight-run sixth-inning and rolled to a game one victory, but could not take advantage of Cameron Arnett's two-hitter in game two as the Cru split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB won 15-0 in game one, but lost 2-0 in game two. The Cru finishes the season with a 22-17 overall record and a 13-8 mark in American Southwest Conference West Division play. Sul Ross State closes out the season with an 18-17 overall record and a 10-11 mark in ASC West Division play.
The Cru took control of game one with a four-run third inning and then broke it open with that eight-run sixth on the way to a 15-0 victory. Chris Joshlin opened the scoring with an RBI single, Josh Fredrick added a two-run double and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 UMHB in the third. Morgan Sloan led off the fourth with a solo homer to give the Cru a 5-0 lead. Joshlin would add an RBI double and Seth Lynn had an RBI single to make it 7-0 UMHB in the fifth. Then the Cru erupted in the sixth. Lynn's double drove in the first run, Sloan followed with an RBI single and Alfredo Melendez singled home the third run of the inning. Kyle Flynn's two-run single made it 12-0 UMHB and Joseph Villegas closed the scoring with a mammoth three-run home run over the scoreboard in right-center field. Jared Hopper scattered six hits and did not allow a run in a complete-game performance. He struck out three and walked five while raising his record to 7-2. Luke Fry took the loss for Sul Ross to drop to 2-5. Lynn was 3-4 for UMHB and Joshlin, Fredrick, Sloan and Flynn all had two hits apiece. Brennyn Smith had three of the Lobos' six hits in the game.
The Cru could not get the offense untracked in the second game and wasted Arnett's outstanding pitching performance in a 2-0 victory. Arnett was perfect through the first three innings before Fernando Dominguez reached on an error to lead off the fourth. Dominguez then stole second base and scored on Smith's single to make it 1-0. It would stay that way as Arnett took a one-hitter into the top of the ninth inning. Smith would hit a two-out solo home run to give the Lobos a 2-0 lead and Lucas Garza struck out the side for Sul Ross in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. UMHB would leave 13 runners on base in the loss and left at least two runners on in five different innings. Arnett struck out seven, did not walk a batter and allowed just one earned run in his two-hitter, but dropped to 6-5 on the year. Leonardo Carranza improved to 6-4 after allowing four hits over five and two-thirds innings. Garza scattered two hits over three and a third innings for his fourth save of the year. Fredrick had two of UMHB's six hits. Smith had both of the Lobos hits and drove in both of the Sul Ross runs in the game.
The Cru will now advance to next weekend's ASC Championship Tournament with its fourth straight berth in the ASC postseason. UMHB finishes the season in a three-way tie for second place with McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University and the Cru will either be the #2 or #3 seed and will most likely travel to Clinton, Mississippi to take on Mississippi College in a best-of-three first-round series next Friday and Saturday. The ASC Championship Tournament field and bracket will be announced late Sunday evening.
