Lewisville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team grabbed a late lead and then ended the game with the program's first triple play in more than 20 years as the Cru posted a 2-1 victory over Louisiana College in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Lewisville. UMHB improves to 26-15 on the season with the victory. The Wildcats, ranked second in the nation, fall to 36-6 on the season with the loss.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings before UMHB finally broke through to score. Sara Roman led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk and Kelsey Greeson followed with a bunt single. Both players moved up a base on Jessica Oliver's sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, the Wildcats intentionally walked Megan Bohne. Brittany Moreno followed with a two-run single to give the Cru a 2-0 lead. Allison Frye led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to cut the UMHB edge to 2-1. The Wildcats would then load the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh on back-to-back singles by Ashleigh Clement and Leslie Eastham. Both players moved up on an error and Devan Greene was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aimee Dubroc then ripped a line drive that Cru third baseman Caitlin Bollier speared for the first out. Bollier then stepped on third to force out Clement and threw to second base to retire Eastham to end the game. That was the first triple play for the Cru since the program moved to NCAA Division III.
Erica White picked up the victory in the circle for UMHB to raise her record to 11-4. White scattered three hits, walked one and struck out two in six and two-thirds innings of work. Kelly Williams took the loss for LC to drop to 8-3 on the season. Both teams finished with five hits in the game and Clement had two of LC's five hits. Five different players had hits for the Cru and UMHB stranded seven runners in the game.
UMHB will now play U.T.-Tyler in a winner's bracket game at 5:00 PM. This is only the third time the Cru has won its ASC Tournament opener in 11 tournament appearances. The Patriots are ranked #1 in the country and advanced with a 6-4 victory over East Texas Baptist. Louisiana College will move into an elimination game against Concordia Texas at 2:00 PM.
