Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team took control of both games in the early innings and then never looked back on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Texas Lutheran University Friday afternoon in Belton. The Cru won game one 12-4 and took game two 15-0 with both games ending early on the run rule. UMHB improves to 18-12 overall and 14-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two victories. The Bulldogs fall to 9-19 overall and 3-11 in the ASC West with the two losses.
UMHB scored six runs in the bottom of the second to take charge in game one and then rolled to a 12-4 victory.
Erica Salazar opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the second and
Hannah White added a three-run home run to make it 5-0 Cru.
Caitlin Bollier's sacrifice fly closed out the scoring in the inning.
Jordan Schrutka led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run and
Jessica Oliver added an RBI single to make it 8-0 UMHB. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the fourth to cut it to 8-4. The first run scored on an error, Cindy Trevino singled home two runs and Karrah Black walked with the bases loaded to get the final run of the frame home.
Brittany Moreno's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth gave the Cru a 9-4 lead and UMHB ended the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Moreno blasted a two-run homer and
Sabrina Garcia's RBI fielder's choice closed out the scoring.
Ariel Kemmerer pitched two and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief to get the win for UMHB and move her record to 1-0. Moreno, Salazar and
Jordan Schrutka had two hits apiece for the Cru and UMHB batters also walked 11 times in the game.
The Cru scored five runs in the bottom of the first and added an eight-run third inning on the way to a 15-0 game two victory. UMHB scored its first run on a wild pitch, Moreno added an RBI double, Schrutka doubled home two runs and Salazar followed with an RBI double to make it 5-0 Cru. UMHB then took advantage of four hits, five walks and three wild pitches in the eight-run third inning.
Lindsey Gordon and Salazar both had two-run singles to highlight the inning. The Cru then scored two more runs on RBI singles from
Dana Criswell and Moreno in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kelsey Greeson was dominant in the circle for the Cru, raising her record to 7-5 with a one-hitter. Greeson struck out four and walked three. TLU's only base-hit of the game was Kayla McMillan's bunt single in the top of the third inning. Oliver, Moreno and Salazar had two hits apiece for UMHB and
Megan Bohne walked seven times in seven plate appearances during the two games.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Dee Dillon Field. UMHB will then travel to Hardin-Simmons University for another crucial ASC West Division series next Friday and Saturday in Abilene.
