Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team converted a penalty kick and then used the defense to make it stand up as the Cru posted a 1-0 victory over Trinity University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 2-0 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Tigers to 1-1 on the year.
The two teams were locked up in a scoreless duel midway through the second half before the Cru finally broke through. A UMHB player was pulled down in the box, setting up a Cru penalty kick. Bo Baker beat Trinity goalkeeper Tim Nelin to the far-left corner to give UMHB a 1-0 lead 66:02 into the match. The Tigers turned up the offensive pressure from there and had several golden opportunities to tie the match. Cru goalkeeper Mark Miller came up big time and time again, and he came out of the goal to punch away one final Trinity scoring chance in the final five seconds to preserve the win.

Miller finished with 10 saves for the Cru and he posted his second straight shutout to open the season. Nelin had three saves in goal for Trinity. The Tigers forced the action for much of the second half and outshot UMHB 24-9 in the match. Trinity held a 12-4 edge in shots in the second half alone. The match was a hard-fought, physical affair that saw the two teams combined for 29 fouls and five yellow cards.

UMHB has now won its last two meetings against Trinity. The Cru also topped the Tigers last season 2-1 in San Antonio. UMHB will return to action with a 12:00 PM home match against Austin College next Saturday at the Cru Sports Plex. Trinity will face U.T.-Tyler tomorrow at 4:00 PM in Belton in the finale of the ASC-SCAC Challenge.
