Tyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team battled back from an early deficit, but U.T.-Tyler had an answer as the Cru dropped a 7-4 decision to the Patriots Friday afternoon in Tyler. The loss drops UMHB to 0-2 on the season. The Patriots improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Cru would dent the scoreboard first when
Chris Joshlin doubled home
Zach Young in the top of the first. The Patriots would answer with three runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Hayden Chick's two-run single. U.T.-Tyler would stretch the lead to 5-1 with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cru fought back in the top of the fifth inning on Young's RBI fielder's choice and another Joshlin RBI double to close to within 5-3. But the Patriots answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-3.
Josh Fredrick's RBI single pulled the Cru to within 7-4 in the top of the eighth, but that's as close as UMHB would get.
Chance Ryan took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1. Ryan gave up five hits and four earned runs in four innings of work. Joshlin went 3-4 for UMHB with two RBI. Matt Schimpf scattered six hits over six innings to pick up the win for U.T.-Tyler. Three different players had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit Patriot attack.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Tyler. The Cru will then return home to host Trinity University in a 2:00 PM single game next Tuesday at Red Murff Field.
