Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not dig its way out of an early hole and the Cru lost a 16-5 decision to Trinity University Tuesday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 0-5 on the season. Trinity improves to 5-1 on the year with the victory.
The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After scoring one in the top of the first, Trinity scored four in the second with Kyle Felix's two-run homer as the biggest hit. UMHB would cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the second on back-to-back RBI doubles from
Seth Lynn and
Ricky Brenek. Trinity would add single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to stretch the lead to 8-2. Lynn added another RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 8-3, but Trinity once again had an answer. The Tigers scored one more in the seventh, four in the eighth and three in the ninth to make it 16-3. The Cru would score two final runs in the bottom of the ninth when
Zach Young singled home a run and came around to score on a wild pitch to cut it to the final margin.
Parker Edmonds took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1 on the year. Edmonds gave up five runs on five hits in one and a third innings. Four other UMHB pitchers combined to give up the other 11 runs. Ben Klimesh raised his record to 2-0 with seven innings of six-hit pitching. Klimesh struck out nine and walked three while giving up three earned runs. Lynn had two of the Cru's eight hits and drove in two of the five UMHB runs. Nicholas Iocovella was 5-5 for Trinity and seven other players had two hits apiece for the Tigers.
The Cru will continue its home stand with a 1:00 PM single, non-conference game against Concordia Texas on Saturday. UMHB will then travel to Mississippi College next weekend for a three-game series.
