Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball put together big innings in both games and made them stand up and the Cru posted a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern University in the 2011 season openers Friday afternoon in Belton. UMHB won game one 8-2 and took game two by a 3-0 score to move to 2-0 on the season. The Pirates fall to 0-4 on the season with the two losses.
Game one was a pitcher's duel into the bottom of the fifth before the Cru exploded for a five-run inning to take control of the game on the way to an 8-2 win. UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Hannah White singled home
Brittany Moreno.
Jordan Giesen singled home a run and
Jordan Schrutka added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Cru in the bottom of the fourth. Southwestern would cut it to 3-1 in the top of the fifth before UMHB's big inning.
Megan Bohne blasted a grand slam to open the scoring and Giesen added an RBI single to put UMHB up 8-1. The Pirates would add a single run in the top of the sixth, but that's as close as Southwestern would get. Bohne finished 3-3 with four RBI and Giesen was 2-3 with two RBI. White also had two hits and she tossed a complete-game, seven-hitter to move to 1-0 on the season. Lyndsy Maus took the loss for Southwestern to drop to 0-2 after giving up nine hits and eight runs in five innings of work. Taylor Turpin had three hits and Kaitlyn Pavlicek added two for Southwestern.
UMHB put all three of its runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth and then held on for a 3-0 game two win. UMHB's
Erica White and Southwestern's Lauren Zearfoss were locked up in a scoreless duel into the fifth. Bohne's two-out single drove in the first run of the inning for UMHB and
Hannah White and
Kaysie Creech followed with RBI singles. That would be more than enough offense for
Erica White. She took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jacquelin Rosson's two-out single broke it up. Pavlicek would add a single in the seventh, but that's all White allowed in a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She struck out seven and walked just one. Zearfoss finished with a four-hitter and she did not allow an earned run in falling to 0-1 on the season. Creech had two of the Cru's four hits and Bohne walked twice and added the RBI single to finish the doubleheader 4-4 with three walks and five RBI.
The Cru made a winner of new head coach
Larry Hennig in his debut and he is now 2-0 as the head coach of the UMHB softball program. The Cru will host U.T.-Tyler for a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Dee Dillon Field. UMHB will then hit the road for a 3:00 PM doubleheader at defending national champion East Texas Baptist next Tuesday in Marshall.
