Baseball tops Concordia 12-5 for Dunaway's first head coaching victory

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team jumped out to an early lead and made it stand up as the Cru posted a 12-5 victory over Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 1-5 on the year with the win and gives head coach Derek Dunaway his first collegiate victory as a head coach. The loss drops Concordia to 3-4 on the year.
 
The Cru grabbed a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Braden Embry's grand slam and Seth Lynn's RBI single. Concordia added a pair of runs in the top of the second inning before Embry drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-2 UMHB. The Tornados would add single runs in the third, fourth and seventh to cut the Cru lead to 6-5, but UMHB answered with a four-run seventh. Embry's RBI double drove in the first run, Lynn added a bases loaded walk and Ricky Brenek hit a two-run single to put the Cru up 10-5. UMHB added two more insurance runs in the eighth on Josh Fredrick's sacrifice fly and Seth Mogavero's RBI single to provide the final margin.
 
Embry finished 2-2 with six RBI and three runs scored. Reinaldo Araujo was 4-4 for the Cru, Chris Joshlin was 3-4 and Lynn and Brenek also had two hits apiece to pace a 17-hit UMHB offensive attack. Nick Kozole had two of the Tornados four hits. Chance Ryan picked up the win for UMHB to move to 1-1 as three Cru pitchers combined on a four-hitter. Sean Thompson took the loss for Concordia after giving up six hits and five runs in one inning of work.
 
UMHB will return to action with a three-game series at Mississippi College next weekend in Clinton, Mississippi. The two teams will open the series with a 6:00 PM single game on Friday night before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday. The Cru will be traveling to Mississippi College for the fourth straight year. The two teams have also met in the First Round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament in Clinton in each of the past three seasons.
