Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a pair of home runs and dominating pitching performance to take game one, but the Cru could not overcome a late deficit in game two as UMHB split a doubleheader with #11 U.T.-Tyler Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru is now 3-1 on the season following the split. The Patriots move to 1-1 on the season.
UMHB broke open a scoreless duel with a pair of home runs and went on to a 3-1 victory in game one.
Caitlin Bollier blasted her first collegiate home run leading off the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Cru a 1-0 lead. It would stay that way into the sixth inning, when
Hannah White ripped a two-run homer to put UMHB up 3-0. The Patriots would score one run in the top of the seventh on Katelyn Thomason's RBI single. U.T.-Tyler would have the tying run at first base, but
Erica White retired the last two batters to preserve the victory. White finished with a complete-game, four-hitter to raise her record to 2-0. She struck out five and walked two. Thomason took the loss for the Patriots after tossing a three-hitter, striking out four and walking four. UMHB first baseman
Megan Bohne walked in all three of her plate appearances to give her a streak of reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances to open the season.
The Cru could not hold on to an early lead as the Patriots battled back for a 6-4 game two win. After U.T.-Tyler scored one in the top of the second, UMHB answered with a three-run second inning.
Brittany Moreno singled home the first run,
Ashton Feight added a bases loaded walk and the third run scored on a flyball double play. U.T.-Tyler would tie it in the top of the fourth when Ashley Campbell singled home a run and came around to score on a wild pitch. Whitney Wyly's RBI groundout and Taylor Freudenberg's RBI single gave the Patriots a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth. The Cru would cut it to 5-4 on
Kaysie Creech's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, but the Patriots added an insurance run on Thomason's RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Hannah White took the loss for UMHB after giving up five earned runs on eight hits in six innings. Stacy Shepherd earned the win for the Patriots with four and a third innings of six-hit pitching. M'Lynn Tillery closed out it for her first save of the year. Six different players had hits for the Cru and Bohne walked in her first two plate appearances to stretch her streak of reaching base to 12 straight plate appearances before it was snapped in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brittani Hanna and Wyly had two hits apiece for the Patriots.
UMHB will now travel to Marshall next Tuesday for a 3:00 PM doubleheader against defending national champion East Texas Baptist. The Cru will then return home for a non-conference doubleheader against U.T.-Dallas next Saturday at 1:00 PM at Dee Dillon Field.
