Clinton, MS – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a big seventh-inning to take control of the game and then held on as the Cru posted a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in Clinton, Mississippi. UMHB took game two 11-10 after winning game one by a 5-2 margin. The Cru improves to 3-6 overall with the two victories. The Choctaws fall to 3-5 on the year with the two losses.
The Cru broke open a tight second game with a seven-run seventh and the held off a furious Choctaw rally for that 11-10 win. UMHB scored two in the top of the first and one in the second before MC cut it to 3-1 in the bottom of the third, both teams added runs in the fourth before the Choctaws tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth. UMHB broke the tie with the big seventh inning.
Reinaldo Araujo doubled home two runs,
Seth Lynn added a two-run double and
Ricky Brenek had a two-run single for the biggest hits in the inning. Clay Crosswhite blasted a three-run homer to pull MC to within 11-7 in the bottom of the seventh and the Choctaws would add three more in the bottom of the eighth, but UMHB threw out the potential tying run at home plate and
Sam VanHoozer set MC down in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory.
Cameron Arnett picked up the win for UMHB to move to 1-1 on the season. Daniel Cowart took the loss for the Choctaws to drop to 0-4. Brenek was 3-5 with three RBI for UMHB and Araujo, Lynn,
Zach Young and
Jeremy Sapp added two hits apiece. Stuart Magee had three hits and three RBI for MC.
The Cru used timely hitting and an outstanding pitching performance from
Chance Ryan to post a 5-2 win in game one.
Braden Embry singled home a run in the top of the first and scored on
Josh Fredrick's double to give the Cru a 2-0 lead. The Choctaws tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second before UMHB took the lead back on
Zach Crosswhite's RBI single and Young's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. Embry added a solo homer in the top of the fifth to provide an insurance run and that would be more than enough for Ryan. He scattered three hits and allowed just one earned run to move to 2-1. Scott Trousdale took the loss for the Choctaws. Embry and Araujo had three hits apiece for the Cru in the win.
UMHB will return to action with a 7:00 PM single game at Trinity University next Tuesday in San Antonio. The Cru will then return home to host Robert Morris for a three-game series next Friday and Saturday at Red Murff Field.
