Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team saw a ninth-inning lead slip away only to rally to send the game to extra innings before losing a 9-8 heartbreaker to Hardin-Simmons University in 11 innings Friday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. Hardin-Simmons improves to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the ASC West with the victory.
 
The Cowboys grabbed 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Cru answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Derek Draeger singled home the first run before Reinaldo Araujo blasted a grand slam to make it 5-1 UMHB. HSU would cut the lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth before Zach Crosswhite ripped a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3. It would stay that way into the top of the ninth inning before the Cowboys posted a five-run inning of their own. Cody Jarboe's two-out, two-run single made it 8-6 and gave HSU just its second lead of the day. UMHB was down to its last strike in the bottom of the ninth before a two-run throwing error tied the game at eight and sent it to extra innings. Troy Tarrant's RBI triple in the top of the 11th gave HSU a 9-8 lead. The Cru would put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the 11th, but UMHB could not push across a run.
 
Draeger, Crosswhite, Zach Young and Josh Fredrick had two hits apiece for UMHB in the game. Andrew Rehling had three of HSU's 13 hits in the game. Ricky Brenek took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 on the season. Skyler Sillivent earned the win with a scoreless 11th inning for the Cowboys.
 
The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. The Cru will then continue its home stand with
