Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team put together a pair of six-run innings to run away with game one, but the Cru could not hold on to a late lead in game two as UMHB settled for a doubleheader split with Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru posted a 14-2 win in game one before falling 5-3 in game two. UMHB is now 8-9 overall and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference play. Hardin-Simmons is 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the ASC West.
UMHB scored six runs in both the second and fifth innings to blow open a tight game in a 14-2 game one victory. HSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Cru answered with the first six-run frame in the bottom of the second.
Braden Embry led off the inning with a solo home run,
Reinaldo Araujo tripled home a run and scored on
Logan Pratt's RBI single,
Zach Young added an RBI groundout and
Josh Fredrick had a two-run double for UMHB. HSU cut it to 6-2 in the top of the third before the Cru posted six more in the bottom of the fifth.
Derek Draeger led off the inning with a solo homer,
Seth Mogavero added an RBI single,
Ricky Brenek drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, Young singled home two more and Draeger added an RBI fielder's choice to make it 12-2. Brenek added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin.
Chance Ryan raised his record to 4-1 with a complete-game, six-hitter for UMHB. Brenek, Draeger and Pratt all had two hits apiece for UMHB in the victory.
The Cru could not hold an early lead in a 5-3 loss in game two. Fredrick's RBI groundout gave UMHB a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Cowboys tied it in the top of the second. Mogavero and Young had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to give UMHB a 3-1 lead and it would stay that way into the top of the eighth. Cody Jarboe and Troy Tarrant had RBI singles to tie the game at three for HSU. Jon Finney's sacrifice fly gave the Cowboys a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth and Jay Hiller drove in an insurance run with a single. The Cru would put a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth, but a game-ending double play stopped the threat. Brenek took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-2 on the season. Mogavero had two of the Cru's four hits in the loss.
The Cru will host Southwestern University for a 2:00 PM single game on Tuesday before returning to ASC West Division play next weekend. UMHB will travel to Abilene to take on McMurry University in a three-game series next Friday and Saturday.
