Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not hold on to an early lead and a late Cru rally fell short in a 6-4 loss to McMurry University Sunday afternoon in Abilene. The loss drops UMHB to 9-12 overall and 1-5 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. McMurry improves to 6-14 overall and 3-3 in ASC play with the victory.
The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead on
Ricky Brenek's RBI single in the top of the first. UMHB pushed the lead to 3-0 on
Zach Crosswhite's RBI groundout and
Zach Young's RBI single in the top of the second inning. Brian Durst's two-run double in the third cut the Cru lead to 3-2. UMHB would make it 4-2 on a run-scoring error in the top of the fifth, but McMurry tied it with two runs in the bottom of that frame. Andrew Bell's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh gave McMurry a 6-4 lead. The Cru would load the bases with one out in the top of the ninth inning, but back-to-back fly outs would end the threat with the tying run on second base.
Kel Shannon took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 after giving up two runs in a third of an inning. Young, Brenek,
Seth Mogavero,
Josh Fredrick and
Seth Lynn all had two hits apiece for UMHB. Michael Dibiasi earned the win in relief for McMurry and Deen Coleman earned his first save after closing out the ninth inning. Durst had two hits and three RBI for McMurry in the win.
